(CNN) - Seventy-five years ago, a British author published a novel that would forever change fantasy writing and create generations of fans.

On September 21st, 1937, J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Hobbit" was released, launching the story that would later become "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy.

Now there's a major Hollywood film of the book on its way in just a couple months, and a new trailer for Peter Jackson's "The Hobbit" was released Wednesday for "Hobbit Week."

The book and film tell the story of Bilbo Baggins, a Hobbit in the fictional world of Middle Earth who sets out on a fantastic journey.

Jackson's film comes out in December and will be the first in a trilogy based on the book.

"Hobbit Week" festivities continue Saturday, known as "Hobbit Day" as it is the birthday listed for Bilbo and Frodo Baggins, the two heroes of "The Hobbit" and "The Lord of the Rings."
