INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Jim Boeheim is The Associated Press' college basketball coach of the year.

His Syracuse team was unranked in the preseason and rose to No. 1.

Boeheim received 38 votes from the 65-member national media panel, well ahead of Kansas State's Frank Martin, who had eight.

The Orange, who lost their top three scorers from last season, finished 30-5 and were a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament. They reached No. 1 in the poll this season for the first time since 1990.

The Hall of Fame coach holds the Division I record with 32 20-win seasons, and his 829 victories are sixth-best all-time and second among active coaches.
