GARY, Ind. (AP) — Fans of Michael Jackson are gathering in the late pop star's northern Indiana hometown of Gary for a weekend of events celebrating his life and career.
Members of the Jackson family, including matriarch Katherine Jackson, watched Thursday from the family's former Gary home as several performers honored her late son's career on what would have been his 55th birthday.
Those performances and other events are scheduled to continue through the weekend in Gary.
The Post-Tribune reports (http://bit.ly/1dt2sY4 ) that among Thursday's crowd of well-wishers was Mary Singer of St. Petersburg, Fla. She says she loved everything about Michael Jackson and became a fan when she lived a few blocks away from the Motown recording studio in Detroit.
Jackson died June 25, 2009, in Los Angeles.
