NEW YORK (AP) — The television networks are certainly ready for some football.
The NFL's opening week illustrated just how important pro football is to broadcast TV networks. The Nielsen company says that seven of the 10 most-watched programs in prime time last week were either NFL games, highlights packages or pregame shows.
The most immediate beneficiary was NBC. The Thursday night opener between Peyton Manning and his Denver Broncos against the defending champion Baltimore Ravens and Sunday's game between the New York Giants and Dallas Cowboys both had more than 25 million viewers.
NBC's viewership for the week was higher than any network's since April.
